Nakamoto improved the design in an important way using a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hashcash\">Hashcash<\/a>-like method to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Timestamp-based_concurrency_control\">timestamp<\/a>\u00a0blocks without requiring them to be signed by a trusted party and introducing a difficulty parameter to stabilize the rate at which blocks are added to the chain.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Blockchain#cite_note-cryptocurrencytech-4\">[4]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0The design was implemented the following year by Nakamoto as a core component of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cryptocurrency\">cryptocurrency<\/a>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bitcoin\">bitcoin<\/a>, where it serves as the public ledger for all transactions on the network.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Blockchain#cite_note-te20151031-3\">[3]<\/a><\/sup><br><br>A blockchain is a\u00a0decentralized,\u00a0distributed, and often public, digital ledger consisting of records called\u00a0blocks\u00a0that are used to record transactions across many computers so that any involved block cannot be altered retroactively, without the alteration of all subsequent blocks.[3][20]\u00a0This allows the participants to verify and audit transactions independently and relatively inexpensively.[21]\u00a0A blockchain database is managed autonomously using a\u00a0peer-to-peer\u00a0network and a distributed timestamping server. They are\u00a0authenticated\u00a0by\u00a0mass collaboration\u00a0powered by\u00a0collective\u00a0self-interests.[22]\u00a0Such a design facilitates\u00a0robust\u00a0workflow\u00a0where participants&#8217; uncertainty regarding data security is marginal. The use of a blockchain removes the characteristic of infinite\u00a0reproducibility\u00a0from a\u00a0digital asset. It confirms that each unit of value was transferred only once, solving the long-standing problem of\u00a0double-spending.
